If I hadn’t taken this vintage ice machine with me, I would have been crushed.
Years ago, a general contractor hired DiMola Bros to remove all the wood in a house — the kitchen cabinets, appliances, flooring and the ceiling. The contractor, who did custom kitchens, was planning to renovate the entire space, which was located in Midwood, Brooklyn. We went in and did a full removal of every interior wall finish so the renovation company could work with a clean slate.
Just before we started demolishing the kitchen, I saw a weird-looking gadget screwed to the side of a cabinet next to the refrigerator. It resembled a rocket with a rotating handle on its side and removable blade on the bottom. As I looked closer, I realized that it was an ice crusher, made in the United States. All you have to do is fill the top with ice, rotate the handle, and the crushed ice is released into the green plastic container at the bottom. Then, you unscrew the green container and dump the ice into a glass, pour your preferred drink, and sip away.
