Gas mask found in Greenpoint, Brooklyn

When I saw this cool antique, I couldn’t mask my excitement.

This is a gas mask from 1949. I found it lying in a pile of old junk on a garbage removal job, after DiMola Bros was asked to clean out an old manufacturing plant in Greenpoint, Brooklyn on Richardson Street.

The mask was manufactured by Mine Safety Appliances Co., a company that was founded in 1914 and is a leading company in designing safety products to help workers endure hazardous conditions. Masks like this one were designed and produced for use in mines, according to the company’s Web site. While there are no operable controls on the gas mask, which is connected to a tank filled with potassium superoxide, a user can control how often air is released based on his own breathing rate.
