Manhattan garbage removal company scores S&H Green Stamps (aka Green Sheild Stamps) on the job!
As you know, I am a garbage guru, rubbish removal enthusiast and avid antique collector. Recycling trash is so much better than throwing it in the garbage! That’s why I take these trash treasures I find on the job and add them to my collection of antiques. My customers take comfort in the fact that I recycle the stuff that they no longer want, rather than throwing it in my dump truck and getting rid of it. I love rubbish removal, and I love collecting garbage, because let’s face it — one man’s trash truly is another man’s treasure.
I’ve collected these books of S&H Green Stamps over the last five years on garbage removal jobs, disposal jobs, apartment clean outs, estate cleanouts and interior demolition jobs, among other rubbish removal services that my Manhattan garbage removal company provides.
Take a look.
S&H Green Stamps were trading stamps, popular in the United States for more than 50 years, from the 1930s to the 1980s. This particular book of stamps, which I found on one of my many garbage disposal jobs a few years back, now sits in a desk drawer in my office in Queens, New York.
S&H is short for “Sperry and Hutchinson company,” which was founded in 1896 by Thomas Sperry and Shelly Hutchinson. This sign, which I also found on a garbage disposal job in New York, is hanging in the bathroom of my office in Ridgewood, Queens.
S&H Green Stamps were distributed as part of a rewards program that was started by Sperry and Hutchinson company. Too bad I can’t use them today! As you can see by the background of this photo, the stamps and merchandise catalog are on display on a desk in my Queens office.
Customers would trade S&H stamps for merchandise from the company’s catalog. I found this book on a different garbage disposal job in Queens, Brooklyn or Manhattan.
During the 1960s, S&H issued three times as many stamps as did the U.S. Postal Service.
Stamps were available to customers at supermarkets, department stores and gasoline stations.
Some of S&H’s competitors included Triple S Stamps, Gold Bond Stamps, Blue Chip Stamps, and Plaid Stamps.
The company Pay by Touch acquired S&H Solutions in 2006.
Since Pay by Touch acquired S&H Solutions, the company has gone bankrupt. (And I don’t want to go bankrupt like they did, so if you know of anyone who needs their rubbish removed, please call 718-326-6969 for a free estimate!)
Fun fact:
Stephen King got his first short story idea (“Happy Stamps”) from his mother’s use of S&H Green Stamps. King’s short story is not published. These stamps are certainly not going to inspire me to write a short story, but they will continue to be displayed in my Queens garage, also known as my museum of rare and unique antiques.
