Antique mechanical protector? Check!

This is a vintage mechanical check protector from the early 1900s. I found it in a house cleanout in Flushing, Queens, about two months ago. It’s super heavy and super awesome, and I knew I just had to have it.

At first glance, I thought this machine was an old tape dispenser, but I later learned I was way off. This check protector was produced by the Todd Protectograph Company in Rochester, N.Y., which manufactured mechanical check protectors from 1900 to 1925. The machines imprinted money amounts on checks and perforated the corners of checks to protect them from being changed or forged.

Based on others like this one I’ve seen online, it looks like a Protectograph Personal Check Writer Model 1500 (a.k.a Todd Personal Check Protector). It has a cylinder on the side that appears to have held extra ink. There’s a cover on the back that opens and wets the ink wheel.

The antique protectors vary in price — I’ve seen some for $25 and some for $250. But there were so many different types of check protectors made, that it could affect what they’re worth today.
