The packaging is cool, too – these days, you would never see such a well-made container for matches. The Coca-Cola hard, cardboard package is about 1.5 inches tall and 1 inch wide. The striking surface is on the bottom of the container.
I found them on a full estate cleanout job in East New York, Brooklyn. It turns out the owner of the house died, and the family got us to clear out all of its contents. In the basement, the former owner had a cool, old-fashioned bar. The matches were behind the counter, right next to a Rheingold Beer tray. Rheingold Beer, a New York beer that was founded in 1883, held 35 percent of the state’s beer market from 1950 to 1960.
As the family member who hired me watched me clear away these old belongings, he started asking questions. I told him that when I find interesting items on my a house clutter job, or a basement cleanout job, I save them and display them in my office. Then, he told me that his father-in-law used to own a bar in the 1950s. It was called “Royal Tavern,” and was at the corner of Sutter Avenue and Essex Street in Brooklyn, New York. I realized that the matches probably came from the ‘50s, too.
Whenever I haul away other people’s old junk, sometimes I forget why I got into this business. But when I meet people, like the family member who hired me, and find amazing, vintage items, like the Coca-Cola matchbox, I remember.
